Terms and Acronyms Found In IDEA and NCLB
- AYP - Adequate Yearly Progress, as used in the No Child Left Behind Act
- Consent - Permission given by a parent in writing to a school to carry out a proposed activity but only after having been fully informed in his/her native language and fully understanding the activity
- Due Process Procedures - Established guidelines and procedures provided under IDEA that protect the rights of children with disabilities and their parents
- FAPE - Free Appropriate Public Education
- IDEA - The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act - the federal law that mandates and describes services that will be afforded children with disabilities
- IEE - Independent Educational Evaluation. An evaluation carried out by an agency independent of the school system. It may be paid for by the school district in some circumstances.
- IEP - Individualized Education Program. The written document that explains the special services a child with a disability will receive, and how, when, and where those services will be delivered. It is based on the child’s individual needs.
- IEP team - Individualized Education Program team - the group of people that develop a child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). This team should always include the child’s parents, and will include various school staff and other individuals who are knowledgeable about the child
- IFSP - Individual Family Services Plan - a written document outlining services that will be provided for a child with a disability aged 0-3
- LEA - Local Educational Agency
- LRE - Least Restrictive Environment - the setting which allows a child with a disability to be educated, to the maximum extent appropriate, with his/her peers who do not have disabilities.
- NCLB - No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), Public Law 107-110, which amends Title I (Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act
- Prior Written Notice - A written statement given by the school to the parents informing them of pending actions proposed by the school
- Procedural Safeguards Notice, also called the Parents Rights Statement - A list of procedural safeguards available to parents that must be given by schools to parents on the occasions specified by IDEA
- SEA - State Educational Agency
- SES - Supplemental Educational Services, provided under No Child Left Behind
